An Hour After A Bomb Went Off, This Cellist Did Something Totally Unexpected

♠ Posted by Unknown in
Sometimes we need to be reminded of why we're fighting against terrorist groups — and that reminder came to Iraq recently in the most unexpected way. After a car bomb exploded in the district of Mansour in western Baghdad killing 20 civilians, a man stepped forward to show that good people are still willing to fight the extremists.
His goal is not to fight with arms, but with the very culture the terrorists are desperate to suppress. If that's not the greatest revenge possible, I don't know what is.

Watch as cellist Karim Wasfi performs at the scene of the attack.

After his concert, a local news crew showed up to capture the moment. "It's my way of expressing my feelings," he told independent Iraqi media channel Soutana.

"Obviously, I cannot challenge the bombs with my cello. When things are abnormal and so insane, we have an obligation to be dedicated to sustaining life," said Wasfi to reporters.

The musician's efforts inspired this amazing act the very next day.

Beautiful. Simply beautiful. If more people acted like this, there's no way the terrorists could win. And that's how you win the War on Terror.

Russians Lost Contact With Their Space Ship - And Now, It's Hurtling Towards Us

♠ Posted by Unknown in ,,,,,
When you think about it, the goal of space organizations is mainly to shoot giant hunks of metal up into the air — but are there procedures in place for when one of those hunks come hurling back down to the ground?
According to NASA, the Russian cargo ship Progress 59 is making progress in the wrong direction, breaking from orbit and heading for our planet's surface. While some of it may burn up in the atmosphere, it's likely that some of the fragments will plummet down to Earth.

Progress 59 launched from Kazakhstan's Baikonur Cosmodrome with the intention of sending supplies to the International Space Station.

However, once the unmanned ship reached its orbit, it lost contact with ground control and started spinning. The spinning is causing the ship to tumble toward Earth.

If Russian flight controllers don't gain control of the ship within a week, it's possible that large fragments from the ship will hit the Earth's surface.

Here is footage of the Progress 59's terrifying death spiral.

Luckily, the ISS has enough food and water that they can live healthily for months without Progress 59's help. The real danger is for us still living on the planet, since we might have to contend with what remains of the cargo ship once it finds the Earth's gravity again.

He Broke Down Some Cardboard Boxes To Make Something You Need To See To Believe

Where's your favorite spot in your home? We're going to venture a guess that it's probably on the comfiest couch or the loungiest lounger. Either way, odds are that piece of furniture is covered in leather, suede, or some sort of soft material, making it a perfect place for a quick (or extended) nap.
Ultimately, comfort is number one, right? That's why, at first glance, this DIY project is a little bit confusing. These two guys wanted to build a lounge chair, but rather than building it out of something more common, they went with a material that isn't particularly sturdy...or comfortable: cardboard.
This seems like it would be a bad idea from the start, but it turned out differently than you might expect.

They started by tracing the design provided by designer Erik Campbell.

When their tracing method failed, Campbell sent them a computer image they could use to get the dimensions correct.

They projected the graphic image of the design against a piece of cardboard on the wall.

This made the process of tracing much easier and more exact.

After they'd cut out the pieces, they began drilling holes where the supports for the backrest would go.

It was time to start putting the thing together.

Cardboard cylinders were used to connect different sections of the chair.

It's starting to look like an actual chair!

The cylinders were aligned to help distribute weight evenly.

Looks pretty great, but they need to add one more thing...

These cardboard supports will help keep the chair upright when someone sits in it.

And here's the finished product!

It doesn't collapse!

(source Reddit)
For being made entirely out of cardboard, this chair actually looks pretty comfy. Just one thing...if you make one for yourself, don't let it get wet! (Although, apparently cardboard is more resilient than we ever knew.)

A Drug Addict Changed His Ways When He Saw Something Strange In This Photo

♠ Posted by Unknown in ,
While some consider ghosts to be expert photobombers, they're certainly not alone in the world of paranormal photobombing. Demons also seem to be quite good at it. In fact, demons might actually be better photobombers than ghosts, which is something Joe Martinez learned a few years ago in the most shocking way.
Martinez, who was heavily involved with drugs at the time, went with his wife to his in-laws' wedding anniversary celebration. It was a fairly ordinary party by all accounts. At one point in the evening, however, someone snapped a picture of Martinez posing with his wife. No one thought anything of it...until the picture was developed.

This is the picture in question. See anything unusual? Check over Martinez's shoulder.

What does that look like to you? After Martinez saw this photo, he became convinced that the creature was a demon, or maybe even Satan himself.

After literally discovering a demon on his shoulder, Martinez cleaned up his act and quit using drugs. Martinez says that he still carries the image in his wallet to remind him of the person he used to be.

(via Ghost Study)
Could it actually have been a demon? Perhaps it was a trick of the light? According to Martinez, several reputable paranormal investigators examined the photo and found no evidence of tampering. Even stranger is the fact that the demon creature did not appear in any other photos from the anniversary party. Fake or not, at least this photo did some good in getting Martinez to clean up his life.

You Won't Recognize These 10 People, But They're The Worst Killers In History

Ted Bundy. Jeffrey Dahmer. Jack the Ripper. You know these people for their brutal, heinous crimes, and they're forever tied to our understanding of serial killers.
But there are plenty more deranged killers out there. Some of them are the last people you'd suspect, and others have just faded into obscurity. Here are ten of the creepiest killers you've never heard of.

1. Cordelia Botkin (1854 - 1910)

In 1895, Cordelia Botkin — a married woman — started an affair with John Preston Dunning, also married. Their sordid affair lasted three years, until Dunning left Botkin and reunited with his wife. So Botkin decided to send her some chocolate. She sent it anonymously and — single-handedly proving why you should never take candy from strangers — laced the chocolate with arsenic. Mrs. Dunning and her sister were both killed, and the three people with whom she'd shared the candies were also sickened, but survived. Botkin's flaw, though, was that she'd written a note along with the chocolate, and her handwriting was matched to letters she'd written to Dunning and his wife detailing their affair. She was sentenced to life in prison, and died in 1910 in San Quentin.

2. Jane Toppan (1857 - 1938)

Jane Toppan was a nurse at Cambridge Hospital in Boston. Her favorite hobby was experimenting on her patients with morphine and atropine to see what it'd do to their nervous systems. She also cuddled with her victims in their hospital beds while they died, later explaining that she was sexually aroused by death. She was eventually fired for her reckless opiate abuse, but soon got jobs as a private nurse and continued to poison just about everyone she came in contact with. She even poisoned herself to gain sympathy. She was eventually arrested, confessing to the murder of 31 people. She spent the rest of her life in a psychiatric hospital.

3. Joseph Vacher (1869 - 1898)

After being released from a psychiatric hospital as "completely cured" in 1894, Vacher began a three-year killing streak, culminating in the deaths of 11 people — most of them shepherds watching over flocks alone. He sexually assaulted, stabbed, and dismembered his victims. This eventually earned him the nickname "The French Ripper" because his M.O. was similar to that of England's Jack the Ripper. He was arrested after his twelfth victim fought back, and readily confessed to the killings. He was executed for his crimes in 1898.

4. "The Servant Girl Annihilator" (event took place from 1884 to 1885)

The name makes this sound like a really bad video game, but this was the name given to an unknown serial killer who preyed on servant women in Austin, Texas, while they slept in their beds. Seven women and one man were killed, and an additional six women and two men were seriously injured during the spree. Although more than 400 people were arrested on suspicion, the killer was never identified. The killings stopped abruptly on Christmas Eve of 1885. Three years later, Jack the Ripper terrorized London, leading some to believe that he and the Servant Girl Annihilator were the same person.

5. Bela Kiss (1877 - ?)

When Kiss started collecting large metal drums and keeping them on his property, his neighbors thought he was stocking up on gasoline in preparation for WWI. In 1914, he was drafted and left for war. Two years later, a town constable remembered the drums on his property and offered their use to soldiers in need. When they opened them, though, they found that each drum actually contained the body of a strangled woman. There were 24 in total, and all had puncture marks on their necks, from which he drained their blood. They were then essentially pickled in alcohol. Kiss was to be arrested in a hospital where he was recovering, but he placed the body of a dead soldier in his bed and fled. He was never caught, though someone claimed to see him in Times Square in 1932.

6. Leonarda Cianciulli (1894 - 1970)

Known as a loving wife, doting mother, and kind neighbor, people were shocked when this woman turned out to be responsible for the deaths of three women in Correggio, Italy. Extremely superstitious, she turned to killing when her son was drafted into the Italian army in WWII believing that only human sacrifices could ensure his safety. Not only did she drug, bludgeon, and dismember her three victims, but she also collected and dried their blood to bake into tea cakes. The third woman was turned into soap. All of Cianciulli's "handicrafts" were shared with friends and neighbors, earning her the nickname "The Soap Maker of Correggio." She died in a criminal asylum in 1970.

7. Henri Landru (1869 - 1922)

Landru was considered to be the real life Bluebeard, who lured women — specifically widows — to his home and then killed them (only after they'd granted him access to their money, of course). Between 1914 and 1919, he killed 10 women, as well as one of their teenage sons. He used so many aliases and so many alibis that he had to keep a detailed ledger of it all, which eventually led to his capture and conviction. The ledger was all that the authorities had to go on, since Landru disposed of his victims by burning their bodies in his stove. He was executed in 1922, and his head is currently on display in the Museum of Death in Hollywood.

8. Fritz Haarmann (1879 - 1924)

Haarmann was known as both the "Vampire" and "Wolf Man" of Hanover, Germany, because his preferred method of killing was biting into his victims' throats, sometimes right through the trachea. He called this his "love bite." He killed at least 24 boys and young men in Hanover between 1918 and 1924. He also stole their possessions and, according to legend, sold the bodies as "mincemeat" on the black market. He eventually confessed, saying that he didn't mean to kill them, but did so in the throes of sexual passion. His deliberate dismemberment of the bodies, however, suggests otherwise. He was executed in 1925.

9. Dorothea Puente (1929 - 2011)

During the 1980s, Puente ran a boarding house for elderly and mentally disabled tenants. She liked to cash their Social Security checks and, if they complained, she murdered them and buried them in the backyard. During her stint as a landlady, she killed as many as nine people and had other people unknowingly dispose of their bodies, including one homeless man who subsequently disappeared. The bodies were later found buried on her property. She was sentenced to life in prison.

10. Kristen Gilbert (b. 1967)

Taking a cue from Jane Toppan, Gilbert also earned the title "Angel of Death" by injecting large doses of epinephrine into patients at the medical center where she worked as a nurse, inducing cardiac arrest. When the emergency happened, she would then resuscitate the patients, saving the day. Four men died from this practice. When the hospital staff grew suspicious of the increase in heart attacks and depletion of epinephrine, she called in a bomb threat to distract investigators. Convicted in 2001, she is currently serving a life sentence.

It just goes to show you that anyone's personality can have a twisted side. Luckily, forensic technology is always improving, so more and more people who commit terrible crimes can be brought to justice.

This Jane Doe Is One Of The Most Famous Women In The World For The Weirdest Reason

♠ Posted by Unknown in ,,,,
In the 1880s, the body of a young woman was found drifting in the Seine River in Paris. One hundred years later, L'lnconnue de la Seine (also known as The Unknown Woman of the Seine), is resuscitated thousands of times a day by people all around the world.
How is this possible? Well, her face was so mysteriously beautiful that her death mask became one of the most popular art pieces in the world. It's still used to mold the faces of first aid mannequins today.

When this Jane Doe was found in the Seine, a pathologist at the Paris morgue was so overtaken by her beauty that he made a plaster mold of her face to show his friends.

Several copies of the face were made, and by 1900, reproductions of L'lnconnue's death mask served as fashionable home decor throughout Europe.

Several popular literary works alluded to the L'lnconnue, not only in Europe, but in Russia and America as well. Some say that a whole generation of German girls modeled their look after her.

In 1958, the mask was used to create the first ever Resusci Anne, used for CPR courses. This is why the face of the L'Inconnue de la Seine is said to be the most kissed face of all time.

In the 1950's, the L'lnconnue was even seen as an erotic symbol by many Europeans. Some even compare the girl's mysterious smile to that of the Mona Lisa. No one knows what the nameless young woman was thinking before she drowned in the Seine...but that knowing smile almost makes it seem like she knew about the fame awaiting her on the other side.

When A Tiny Dog Fell Down A Pipe, Firefighters Were Called In For This Rescue

♠ Posted by Unknown in ,,,,,,
This past Tuesday in Georgia, a seven-week-old puppy named Toshi disappeared to the dismay of her four-year-old owner. The teeny tot was small enough to fall down an exposed PVC drainage pipe, where she remained for eight hours. When Animal Control showed up, there was nothing they could do, so the DeKalb County fire department was called to the scene.

Firefighters dropped a small camera down the pipe to assess the situation.

Sahri, Toshi's owner, had just received the pup for her fourth birthday.

Firefighters began to dig to get to the dog...

But when that wasn't enough, the big guns were brought in.

Sahri stood watch as things progressed.

But then, a water main broke and flooded the area...

Which meant the dog could have drowned...

But firefighters thought on their feet and used a sign to block the water.

Once Toshi was finally rescued, Sahri was happy to have her back in her arms, noting that "she's cold," and "she's not in trouble" anymore!

Look at these two together!

Watch the rescue go down in this incredible video!

We're so glad the little trooper is alright!

Thankfully these men and women were so dedicated to their work, otherwise this little tyke would've stood no chance! Once the dog was above ground, animal officials gave her oxygen. They say she'll be perfectly okay.
